Advanced Study of Animals
by Craig Inanen

The Bavarian Downslider

The Bavarian Downslider lives outside of town
High in the Alps where it slides down
They’re black as black as black can be and they come out at night
If you should hope to see one, you’re going to need a light

The Bee

The bee is aerodynamically
An engineering calamity
For science does not understand
How it can take off, fly or land

The Bison

The Bison is a shaggy beast
On prairie grass they’re known to feast
That is their favourite form of feed
When not engaged in a stampede

The Border Collie

The Border Collie has a high I.Q.
It might be smarter than me and you
But if you find one on a bus
Don’t expect it to do any calculus

The Carrousel Horse

The Carrousel Horse goes up and down
And travels merrily round and round
The Carrousel Horse will never roam
For it doesn’t stray too far from home

The Crocadigator

Deep in the dark of the Congo park
Lives an animal who wasn’t in the ark
The terribly fearsome Crocadigator
Who’ll chase you now and catch you later

The Finch

The tiny Finch
Will do in a pinch
Should you need a little bird
You might not see one right away, but they are often heard

The Flea

Overlooked in the animal hierarchy
Is an insect called the common Flea
I don’t suppose that’s really right
For they’re a notorious parasite

The Kangaroo

You cannot ride a kangaroo
For indoor pets they just won’t do
But if you like to jog and run
A kangaroo might be the one

More Octopi

It has been speculated by people who should know
If we precipitate the apocalypse and cause the bomb to blow
The octopi will rule the earth and the waters down below
It makes a body wonder if they’ll be glad to see us go

The Oriole

The Oriole I will extoll
Is neither snide nor terribly droll
It’s colorful with music sweet
So far as birds it’s rather neat

The Porcupine

You cannot cuddle a porcupine
When asked to dance they do decline
But if you prefer the prickly kind
Then keep the porcupine in mind

The Red Angus

The Red Angus is a wonderful cow
But I don’t see exactly how
A bovine of that noted ilk
Don’t provide us all with strawberry milk

The Snail

The ordinary garden Snail
Invariably leaves a trail
A glistening wet and slimy track
That aids a snail should it go back
