Wizards vs. Vampires
by Alex Andy Phuong

Just to be clear, my dad's side of the family likes Harry Potter, and my mom’s side of the family likes Twilight.  The conflict between wizards and vampires has had a direct impact upon my first semester at Pasadena City College.  Three of my aunts, who were Aunt Dung, Aunt Nga, and Aunt Mai, all asked me to join them for a viewing of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 during October before the November 18 release date.  After doing some scheduling, we finally decided to watch it on the Sunday of that film’s opening weekend.

That Sunday was very memorable for me because I learned a lot about myself on that very special day.  My Aunt Dung arrived at my home that morning, and asked me if I was ready to go to the Edwards Theater on Main Street in Alhambra.  I told her that the film was not playing at that theater because the only nearby theater that was showing that film was the AMC in Monterey Park.  My Aunt Dung was shocked and confused about the fact that I did not tell her that fact earlier.  She then called my Aunt Nga, who was driving my cousin, Chloe, to the wrong theater.  The two of them had the following conversation…

“Wait!  If it’s not playing at the Edwards, then where is it playing at?!”

“It’s at a theater on Atlantic and Hellman.”

“Hellman!?  Where the **** is Hellman?!”

Luckily, my Aunt Nga had a GPS system in her car, so she eventually found the AMC in Monterey Park.  (Man, I knew I should have told them this sooner…ugh…)

After we finally congregated in the foyer, my aunts were yelling at each other because of my own personal mistake.  My body shook.  My Aunt Mai asked me if I was okay, but I did not make a sound.

“Alex, relax!  Think of a happy place!”

I obeyed.

After a few minutes had passed, I began to calm down.  When I finally started breathing normally again, my Aunt Nga asked me what my happy place was.  My response was… “P-C-C ENG-LISH CLASS!”

My three aunts all shouted in unison, “ENGLISH CLASS?!?!”

My Aunt Nga gasped, and then exclaimed, “GEEK ALERT!”

Then my Aunt Nga spoke to me humorous sentences related to my happy place, such as…

“Hey Alex, think about sentences!  And think about word choice!  And think about BOOKS!  REALLY, REALLY BIG BOOKS!”

My cousin, Chloe, said, “I cannot believe that your happy place is an English class!”

“Well…it’s true…lol”

We all eventually purchased our tickets, and enjoyed the film.

I like books because I do.  I like books, and that is true!
