Nonexistent Cousin
by Eric Miller

I have a nonexistent cousin
on whom I frequently rely
to use as an excuse,
well no, actually lie.

It works quite well, I must admit
In fact, he’s really a perfect fit
for me to dodge a social event
without feelings being dent.

I just say that it’s really a shame,
but I cannot join them in their game
because I promised my cousin dear
that I would be with him so I could hear
the recital he was performing on that date
which coincided by some fate.

Everyone asks when they’ll meet him
which leaves me hanging on a limb
from which I fear that one day soon
I will fall and my reputation ruin.
