The worst thing imaginable happened
as the church bells of St. Mathew’s chimed
at four o’clock on the 18th of December in
1924. It was a complete shock to the small town’s
inhabitants and changed how they viewed their
lives from that point onward. So catastrophic
were its long-term effects that every year on the
anniversary of the ghastly incident people
flocked to houses of worship worldwide to pray
that it would never happen again.
