Children
by Jeff Burton

I used to work with children
Five days of every week
I'd walk around the playground
As they'd giggle, run and shriek
I'd stand before the blackboard
Bravely trying to teach
While surrounded by a host of them
All easily in reach

But now I find they irk me
And their noises make me cringe
They only ever seem to cry
Or shout or moan or whinge
If I see them in the distance
I'll walk across the street
And any day without them
Is a day I feel complete

Perhaps I have been wounded
By those years spent in the fray
Perhaps that is the reason
I have ended up this way
One thing I know for certain
Deep within my heart and spine
Is the only kids that I can stand
Are those precious ones of mine
