Cut to the Quick (for an unworthy lover)
by Abigail Wyatt

A British woman seldom shows her grief.
She will bite her lip and keep her shoulders square.
But it brings her some small comfort and relief
to do something daft or drastic with her hair.

When the man to whom she’s given all her trust
betrays her then moves on without a care,
she is very much inclined to feel she must
do something daft or drastic with her hair.

With heavy heart and hand she’ll pour the wine
she bought to dull the depths of her despair.
You can bet, before it’s gone, she’ll feel inclined
to do something daft or drastic with her hair.

She may choose to dye it blonde or candy pink;
she may opt to crop it shorter than a prayer.
Though it’s ludicrous, it’s ten to one she’ll think
to do something daft or drastic with her hair.

Don’t think, though, that I cut my hair for you.
On this point, let there be no room for doubt:
it’s not a course I would have chosen but
you gave me so much grief my hair fell out.
