Just A Couple Of Drops
by Dave Robertson

'Oops, sorry! I didn't mean to splash into you like that.'

'No problem. Quite understandable. It is a bit crowded in here.'

'And dark.'

'Yes. Everybody's jostling for position. I wonder where we are?'

'Some sort of container I think, probably with a lid, it gets a bit echoey up near the surface.'

'Really! I haven't been up there yet. I was just trying to get my bearings here first.'

'I just popped up for a breath of fresh air. I was on my way back when I bumped into you.'

'Like I said it's no problem: if you don't mind me asking, your voice sounds familiar, have we met before?'

'I thought that about you. Tell me have you ever been to a puddle in Naples?'

'Not that I recall, although I did spend a little time in a Roman bath.'

'No, that's not it. Perhaps a coffee pot in Starbucks?'

'Possibly, I've been there a few times; hang on though, you're not... Are you!?'

'Not what?'

'Not, rainbow over Victoria Falls; oh my, it is isn't it?

'Good grief, yes! How long has it been?'

'Millennia surely. What are the chances?'

'Very slim. I don't think I've ever met another water droplet more than once. There are trillions of us out there. The odds must be infinitesimal.'

'Well I never! So what have you been up to since?'

'Touring mostly. I've done all the oceans and there aren't many seas I haven't been part of. How about yourself?'

'It's been a bit embarrassing.'

'I shouldn't have asked.'

'No, it's nothing. It's just that I got locked up for a very long time.'

'Really!'

'Yes. An Alaskan glacier.'

'Oh dear. Dare I ask; how was it?'

'Not all it's cracked up to be. Bitterly cold and a lot of intense pressure.'

'Never mind, you're out now.'

'Yes thank God.'

‘And here we are.'

'Yes, here we are... I fancied you, you know, that day at the rainbow. You were so colourful.'

'So were you. Ruggedly handsome I thought. I dreamt about you for years afterwards.'

'This must be fate. Do you think we could spend some time together? I've learnt a lot about surface tension since we last met.'

'I'm not sure I know how...'

'I'll show you. If I just...and then you...'

'Hoo, that tickles.'

'Sorry, I'll stop.'

'Please don't. I like it - I like it a lot!'

'So do I. It's as if we were made for each other. You're so clean and fresh.'

'And so are you. Someone's gone to an awful lot of trouble to spruce us up.'

'We must be in for something special.'

'I feel special now that I'm with you.'

'You say the most wonderful things.'

'I mean every word. Wait - what on earth was that?'

'Some sort of flushing noise: oh, we're moving. Hold on tight!'

'Oh how exciting, rushing through this pipe together.'

'I can see daylight. We're heading for some sort of bowl.'

'Here we go. Weeeeee!'

'Eurggh!'
