Kon-Sticki
by Andy Foster

In 1947, Thor Heyerdahl sailed the raft Kon-Tiki from Peru to the Polynesian islands, aiming to prove that those islands could, in centuries past, have been settled by inhabitants of South America, who travelled there on prevailing ocean currents.

Along the same lines, I recently set out to prove that a group of canoeists spotted downriver of Cobden Bridge in Southampton could, at some time in the past, have travelled there on prevailing currents from the upriver side.

To test my theory, I threw a stick into the River Itchen from the northern side of the bridge, then crossed over the road (being careful to check first for traffic), and looked into the river on the southern side. And there was my stick!

I plan to write a book about my adventures.
