Sex Education
by Hareendran Kallinkeel

He remembered the advice his friend gave him during his teenage:

“Never make love to your spouse on the wedding night. You need to first get acquainted with each other. Know each other; love each other. Then only you can enjoy sex.”

His friend had also added that these were not his ideas, but lessons borrowed from an ancient text on sex.

Hailing from an orthodox Hindu family, his upbringing was strict and he seldom had any other buddies. So, he earnestly believed in his only friend's counsel.

“It was great fun, you know.”

She listened to her friend's voice ringing with excitement.

“As soon as I closed the door he pulled me towards him, crushing me onto his chest. Then, he slid his hand beneath my sari and began caressing my underbelly. Then…”

Born of liberal parents, she had enough freedom to do whatever she wanted. But she had never allowed her boyfriends to cross the limits. So she had never known how a man's touch felt.

“He laid me onto the bed and…”

Anxiety built up, racing along her upper thighs, tickling her groin and causing goose-bumps to bloom along her skin.

“Oh, my…” Her friend's voice dropped to a whisper. “He's coming.”

The phone went dead.

The wedding night arrives.

She tiptoes into the bedroom, carrying a glass of warm milk. She places it on the bedside table, closes the door and sits on the bed.

He puts a hand on her shoulder. “You're beautiful,” he says.

A blush intensifies the redness of her cheeks. Her tucked toe draws unseen arcs on the Italian marble.

“I want to talk to you. Tell you about myself. Hear you talk, telling me about you…”

She waits.

He continues talking.

Anticipation tantalizes her, agonizing.

He continues speaking.

She keeps waiting…

For him to pull away her sari… remove the hooks of her blouse; for his hand to slide beneath the band of her skirt.

All that follows is boring drone of his words that makes no sense to her.

She abandons him the next day, leaving a note behind: We had a lifetime to tell stories. But there's only one first night, which you deprived us of.
